3 Unexpected Ways to Use Fresh Spices at Home

Your spice cabinet may be the first place you reach for when you’re preparing a meal that needs a little extra zing using the freshest spices, but did you know that spices can also have a variety of other uses? From your beauty routine to helping your garden thrive, spices can be hardworking ingredients both inside and outside of the kitchen.

Here are three unexpected ways that you can use spices at home in something other than your favorite recipe:

  1. Cinnamon Ornaments for Holiday Fun: Perfect for the holidays, cinnamon ornaments are a fragrant addition to your entertaining spaces - and a really fun craft! To make them, preheat your oven to 120 degrees F and mix together 6 tablespoons of applesauce with 10 tablespoons of ground cinnamon and 1 teaspoon of ground cloves. The “dough” should be claylike in texture. Then, sprinkle a work surface with cinnamon and roll out your dough to about 1/8th inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes but use a skewer to make a hole in your ornament for putting through yarn or string so that they can be hung up. Bake for 90 minutes, turn the oven off, and then leave ornaments to cool and dry overnight. Store in an airtight jar or begin decorating!
  1. Red Pepper to Prevent Pests: If you’re seeing your garden be eaten by insects, rodents, deer or groundhogs, you can protect your yield by making a red pepper spray. Start by blending 2-4 tablespoons of hot pepper flakes with about a gallon of water. Let sit for 2 days so that the pepper’s natural oils infuse the water. Pour into a spray bottle and mist lightly on your plants. (Just make sure to wash any yielded produce well before eating!)
  1. Pampering with Himalayan Pink Salt Scrub: Keep your skin soft by using a salt scrub - it’s perfect for tired hands and feet! Start by stirring together 2 parts Himalayan pink salt with 1 part extra virgin coconut oil along with a few drops of your favorite essential oils that are skin-safe (lavender is one of our favorites).

What’s your favorite way to use spices outside of the kitchen?
